My Dad Was 72 and Hard as a Rock. I Found Out Why in His Garage. Here Are 7 Reasons It Works After 45.

There's a page in an old fighter's training log that reads: 10 rds, 30 on / 30 off. Wt 151. Need 147 by Fri. That's the whole method, written down in 1975. The bell rings, all out for thirty seconds. The bell rings again, you rest. Ten, maybe twelve minutes and you're done. An honest trainer will also tell you part of a fighter's weight cut is water that comes straight back — so that isn't the part you're copying. The conditioning is. What men use for it at home now is two weighted handles with a heavy spring inside, called cordless battle ropes. No bag to hang, nothing to anchor. Here are the 7 reasons it works after 45 when nothing else did.

REASON #1

Thirty Seconds All Out. Rest. Go Again.

That's a round, and it's the whole workout. It's what's written on every page of an old fighter's log: 10 rds, 30 on / 30 off. They trained that way because there's a scale on Friday with a number on it and no next month. Ten, maybe twelve minutes and you're finished. No gym sells you that, because there's no money in ten minutes. There's money in a building, a card, and an hour of your night.

REASON #2

It Probably Isn't Your Genes

That's the first place most men land, and it's where I landed. One man is lean and hard at 72 and his son has a gut at 50, so you file it under luck he got and you didn't. Genes are real — but ten minutes every morning for fifty years against five years of a treadmill will explain most of a gap like that. And what changes first isn't the scale. It's the belt going back a notch, then another, and shirts sitting the way they did before.

REASON #3

Your Feet Never Move, So Your Knees Never Pay

Rope work is what trainers hand anyone who can't take the pounding any more — including old fighters whose shoulders stopped letting them hit the bag. You stand in one spot the whole time. Your arms, shoulders, back and stomach all work at once while you're breathing hard, and nothing lands, nothing jars. If running finished your knees, this is the part that matters.

REASON #4

Two Handles, About Three Pounds Each, Fits in a Drawer

Everyone thinks the same thing: three pounds a handle, I've carried heavier groceries. Then they try it. Inside each handle is a heavy steel spring that loads and fights back on every swing, so you're not lifting three pounds — you're fighting the same wave a fifty-foot gym rope makes. One old boxer called it a fight gym that fits in a drawer. Most men put them down inside four minutes the first morning.

REASON #5

Ten Minutes Is Enough — and It Keeps Working After You Stop

Go that hard and your body doesn't stop when the bell does. It spends the next few hours recovering, and recovering costs energy, so you're still paying for those ten minutes at your desk at lunchtime. A man on a treadmill stops paying the second he steps off. That's the whole difference, and almost nobody explains it.

REASON #6

Give It Two Weeks Before You Decide It Doesn't Work

Straight talk, because you've been sold things before. Your first morning you'll probably last about four minutes and have to sit down — that's normal, and it isn't an age thing. I sent a pair to a 24-year-old who called me after his first go and said: four minutes, I had to sit down. The first two weeks the scale may not move at all, and you can't out-train a bad lunch, so fix that at the same time. Most men who quit, quit in week two, right before anything shows. And when it does start, you'll see it in your belt before you ever see it on the scale.

REASON #7

Small Batches. When One's Gone, It's Gone.

Ekoh makes these in small runs, so stock comes and goes. Right now it's $99 instead of $200 with the training gloves and quick-start guide included free. If they're in stock when you look, that's the part not to sit on.

Down a notch already

Fifty, desk job, gut since my forties. Ten minutes in the garage before work since the spring. My belt's back two notches and my shirts fit the way they did before. Actually use this one

I'm 46 and I've bought every gadget you can think of, most of them are in the garage collecting dust. This one I actually use because I can do it before the kids are up. Shipping took about 5 days. The gloves are fine, nothing special, but I wear them. Down 9 pounds since July and my wife noticed before I said anything. Works, but be realistic

Works, but be realistic about it. First two weeks nothing happened and I nearly put them in the closet. Week 6 now and my shirts fit different. Only gripe is I wish the handles were a bit thicker, I've got big hands. Works, but be realistic about it. First two weeks nothing happened and I nearly put them in the closet. Knees are fine after

Bad knees from 20 years of running. This is the only thing I can go hard at that doesn't leave me limping the next day. Bad knees from 20 years of running. Keep them in the truck

Keep a pair behind my seat and do rounds on my lunch break. Takes up no room at all. Keep a pair behind my seat and do rounds on my lunch break. Takes up no room at all. Keep a pair behind my seat and do rounds on my lunch break. Takes up no room at all.
